Run For Your Life

We recently featured in our local newspaper The Herald Express and on Devon Live for the running that the children do in our school. Below is a copy of the article:

At St Margaret’s Academy in Barewell Road, Torquay, the whole school is involved, some 360 pupils.

Teacher Will Mayling said they had started the initiative last year.

“Everyone was keen and it has been really successful. The children were keen to log their miles – in total, I think it was the equivalent of running to China or something like that – and we have had prizes and medals for their efforts. There have also been special assemblies.

We did some base line measurements at the beginning. Compared to the original measurements there have been improvements in their health – in general fitness levels and endurance. They were able to complete more laps and to continue further without stopping.

The children love it, they love getting out and exercising, they find it a social event. They enjoy achieving the challenges themselves but also competing against each other.

The Premier Sport system is very good, there are certificates and rewards and the children like getting the recognition for their efforts. We set them running for a certain time rather than a distance, four or five minutes.

All their laps add up to achieving miles over the week which is worked out on the website.”
